A Pretty Good Speech

What a great ceremony! Although the Prez (so great to call him that) has been kicking some butt already, the real work begins now. I really enjoyed the ceremony and speech, but it didn’t make me all giddy like I felt when we found out the election result.

I think the really wonderful thing is that George Bush is on his way BACK to Texas to stay. It’s the end of a very embarrassing era in American History. I saw Dick Cheney in his wheelchair working his way to the stage area looking like his usual angry self. I can’t think of enough bad things to write about Dick Cheney right now, so I won’t bother. Let’s just say that as I saw him being carefully wheeled down a ramp I wished more than anything the person holding him would let go.

I’m not sure the kids were really impressed with the historical import of it all, but they were pretty happy that I brought in donuts for the morning class and pizza for the afternoon class.

I DO have some hope for the future now. When I heard Secretary of State Clinton vow to get more people in the Foriegn Service than are currently serving in military bands… a sign that we’ll use diplomacy rather than force. I heard Attorney General Holder say unequivocally that waterboarding is torture, and that we ARE going to close Guantanamo.

I also feel like the pressure’s on my generation now. Barack Obama is exactly four years older than I am. (That’s right… the same birthday) I can’t blame all the problems on the past generation anymore and hope that they’ll fix things.

As President Obama said, it’s up to all of us.
