Almost Innoggeration
Wonderful inaugural weekend with the QoMU. After being disappointed from the decided lack of snow days last week, I decided to settle with a three day weekend.
Friday afternoon with Joe, Jimmy and Doug. Hanging with Joe and Jim is a history lesson, going from national to international. Anyway, Joe is pretty happy with Obama, and Jimmy thinks he’s the next best thing to Kennedy. They both remember Kennedy’s inauguration speech.
Saturday we decided to finally take down the Christmas tree and all sundry decorations. I had great respect for this tree, so I tried to denude it as reverently as possible. This was the three that, less than an hour after decorating went into forward drop after Chaplin started wrestling with the light plug. It was on a hopelessy inadequate tree stands. I’m done with those little crappy metal ones forever.
I organized the entire ornament collection. It bothers me every year, and since this is my year of organization, I sorted them all out. Some in original boxes, others in bags, etc. We have some killer ornaments. The wall looks awfully empty without the Christmas tree though.
To celebrate the tree removal, Terra and new boyfriend Matt came over for pizza. He’s officially earned boyfriend status from Terra, but has our full approval. He’s a PhD candidate in ceramics engineering, and is going to develop the power source of the future and that’s all there is to it. He’s really happy to hear about the millions of dollars injected into the alternative energy field. Could mean some non-military ispired research.
Sunday, and an afternoon party with Alexandria, our local equivalent of a precinct captain for the democratic party and all things crunchy. It was the first time I’ve brought my guitar out for anybody but QoMU in a long time, but it was a blast. Everybody had cool change-inspired songs, some self-written. Then we banged out some Bob Dylan and John Prine. It’s been so long since I’ve played with other people that I forgot there were so many songs with C, D and G. Anyway, we rocked the house with “the times they are a changin” and “blowin in the wind.”
My dip ruled too. Yes.. MY dip. QoMU gets credit by default for any good food coming from Coatsbergshire Manor. It’s a nine-layer dip that I adapted from TGIFridays.
Tomorrow for some reason I’d been planning for business as usual with my government classes. I don’t think so. Donuts and milk second block, then pizza for last block. My classes fall on either side of the inauguration. What a year to teach history.
The last year I shared in one of those “I remember where I was when…. ” moments was 9-11. The kids were freaked out. I’m looking forward to spending the historic day with my students who, I hope, are half as hopeful as I am.
