Ben Stiller’s Faux Metal Jacket
I’ve seen some pretty funny movies this summer. I finally watched “Walk Hard:The Dewey Cox Story” and loved every minute of it. A couple weeks ago I saw “Pineapple Express” and love at least 9 out of 10 minutes of it. But today we saw “Tropic Thunder” and it far overshadowed all of them. I haven’t laughed so hard since Borat.
From the VERY first minute of the movie I was laughing my ass off, as was the rest of the audience. This is by far Ben Stiller’s masterpiece to this point. It features Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black at their absolute comic best, but I think the best comic (and dare I say “Oscar-worthy?) performance came from Tom Cruise.
I can’t describe any of the plot for you or I’d ruin it.
This movie is to war movies what “Walk Hard” was to music biopics, but it’s much, much better. I love it when actors make fun of each other and themselves, and that’s something that Ben Stiller did quite well in his cameo role on “Extras.” The casting in “Walk Hard” was great but nothing like the star studded cast of “Tropic Thunder.”
I have to admit that I didn’t go to the movie expecting much. I thought the promos were stupid. I like Ben Stiller and LOVE Robert Downey Jr.. I liked what little I’d heard of the premise but had no idea I’d be in for the kind of gut-busting humor that spans the comic range from sophomoric fart jokes to social satire without missing a beat.
See this movie. Here’s the trailer…. but it doesn’t BEGIN to get into what the movie’s about.

I keep hearing this is good flick. I’ve been pretty hesitant to see it because honestly I really don’t like Ben Stiller. He just never seems the least bit believable. The only movie of his I can think of off the top of my head that I like is Dodge Ball, and I like it in spite of him, not because of him. He just always seems like a cartoon character to me. I feel similar about Will Ferrel, but he’s at least shown that he does have other sides. (Stranger than Fiction) And maybe thats what other people like about those guys, but I don’t, oh well.
Anyway I’ve heard enough good about this movie that I probably will have to watch it, although I’m too cheap to go to the theater, I’ll wait and rent it.
