Summer of Love

As the summer draws to a close, and I prepare for bed at a horrifically early hour to wake up at a more horrific hour to go to work, I feel compelled to reflect on the wonderful summer. In my little corner of the world, in our little corner of Naples, it could best be called the summer of love.

This was the second summer in which I didn’t have to work a second job, so it left me free to spend time with the Queen of My Universe. We spend most of the school year with only a couple hours of weekday quality time to spend together, so we really enjoy each other’s company in the summertime. Given this time, I just find more and more things about her that I love and cherish. Over the summer we’ve grown closer, more in love and, to the rest of the world we’re probably weirder too.

Love, or at least some burgeoning romance is seeping out of both sides of central East Ave. DOUG met Amy at a barn dance in May or June. Having been burnt too many times, DOUG played it as cool as he could for a while, but Amy seems to fried all his circuits. He’s been completing one romantic coup after another, culminating with Christmas in August complete with fabric-wrapped presents and a fresh cut Christmas tree decorated with flowers from his back yard. Dude’s got it bad, and for good reason.. Amy is wonderful.

On the other side of the commune, Earth child has developed quite a fixation with a young man named Cameron, who swung up to Naples on his cross country bike trek to spend her birthday with her. They’re separated now by distance… he lives around Albany… but I have a feeling it’s going to develop into something wonderful.

The Princesses of my Universe graced our presence for a while, and we had two wonderful weeks together at the beginning and end of the summer. I can’t believe they’ll be in second, sixth and eighth grades.

The summer has brought our three households closer together than ever before. Our pets go back and forth between houses… we go back and forth between houses… and it’s wonderful. Our commune now has an unofficial colony further up East Ave… Mona and her kids Toby and Jessie are moving into our tribe as well.

I suppose it’s incumbent upon me to try to spread this love generously out to my co-workers and students. I’m looking forward to seeing and meeting them respectively, but the bottom line is that I wish I didn’t have to leave Naples. I guess I really wish this summer of love didn’t have to draw to an end.

QoMU, P’soMU, DOUG, LIZ, Brian, Seth, Earth Child, Mona, Toby, Papo, Chelsea, Dad, my Potsdam buddies… much love and thanks for making this summer of love the best ever.
