Nope…. Nothing Wrong Here

I’m really having a hard time figuring out how and why, after this freakish summer of weather all over the country, some people are still in complete denial of climate change. One of the good things about the Finger Lakes, and our part of Western New York is that we haven’t gotten the deadly weather the rest of the country has gotten. Not yet anyway.

We’ve gotten some really wild localized storms here this summer. These are pictures of a storm we got some time in July. It only took the storm a few minutes to tear through town. This is the front of DOUG’s house. This branch missed ripping off his porch by about two feet.

Despite all the twisted and downed wires you see in this picture, the wasn’t the main cause of the power outage that lasted most of the day.

So then, the Queen of My Universe, Earth Child and I were riding home from the city, and we see slush piles of hail in the road. We got home, and then about a half hour later we got pounded with the same storm, only it got bigger. There was about an inch of hail on the deck, and the wind was blowing so strong it made a drift on our welcome mat.

The street across from us probably got the biggest blast of hail, and the biggest drifts. There were a couple inches across the road the morning after.

For us, this weather has meant a minor inconvenience… our neighbor’s backyard gardened got the crap pummelled out of it, we lost power for a while…. big deal. My heart goes out to all the people who’s lives have been devastated by this year’s weather. I fear what future summers will have in store while we continue to ignore global warming.

  1. Its cyclical, or its caused by sun spots, er… its a conspiracy by the scientists who… uh… are Evil!

I think many people need to deny climate change because to accept it makes inaction immoral. As long as they can hold on to any theory which says its not their fault, they will, no matter how little evidence supports them. This is one of the many reasons why I think we need to stress critical thinking skills. There are altogether too many people who can and will simply dismiss hard evidence out of hand. That scares me.

On the up side it has meant less shoveling in the winter.
