21st College Reunion

As I write, the Queen of my Universe and I are heading north for my 21st College Reunion. This probably begs the question “Why your 21st instead of your 20th?” The answer? That’s just how we roll.

I and the people I hung out with in college aren’t 20th Anniversary Reunion people. The 20th anniversary probably involved an endless parade of hoopla, lame alumni bands and countless requests for donations. That’s why none of us went.

My fraternity brother Jamie organized the whole event, starting with an inquiry email suggesting we just go up, as a group, and just hang out and try to reconnect and get in touch with the inner pre-adults that we were in college. Most of the people are directly or indirectly tied to my fraternity, which helps to explain why we all missed the 20th reunion. The 20th reunion was for fraternities that took themselves seriously enough to organize around year 20, whereas we just didn’t get our shit together, choosing instead to show up a year late and make our own party.

The cool thing is that we get to stay in the dorms. One of our gang is a professor now and was able to twist the arm of a residence life operative. This in and of itself will be a nostalgic, and for some, a sickening experience. It may be a sickening experience for us since I forgot to pack a fan, and a million other things Jamie suggested we bring.

As we drive, I’ve just informed QoMU of all these things I forgot to pack, evoking the eye roll and patient smile…a combination that warms my heart.

It’s not ironic that I failed to pack a few essentials in light of the things I DID pack. Every dorm room needs good sound, so I packed the Zen, a subwoofer and some desktop speakers, along with all the cables and chargers that that implies. Music is what really tied our whole group together after all. I made sure we had a couple episodes of “Weeds” and a movie or two on the hard drive for down time.

Should be an interesting weekend.
