I’ve Lost Faith in the Political System

I heard Elliot Spitzer speak for the first time when I was at a teacher’s conference in Albany a couple years ago. I heard him talk about his experience bringing down the monsters in Wall Street. He gave a little lesson in history, and how his hero was Teddy Roosevelt because TR was willing to take down the giants and make some unpopular decisions.

By the time he was done my heart was pounding and I was almost moved to tears with the thought that this could be our next governor. A guy who has the balls to refer to himself as a Progressive. A guy who has the balls to say without hesitation that he’s a liberal. After god knows how many years of Pataki, here was a light in the dark gloomy tunnel of state electoral politics. I was sure Spitzer was destined for more greatness than New York State had to offer.

But no. Elliot made it to Rome and did as the Romans did. I thought he was better than that. I thought he would save Rome. He dug his grave and sealed the coffin shut in one not-so-swift move. I’m already prepared to watch Joe Bruno dancing around on Spitzer’s political grave.

At least for the time being, I’ve lost my faith in politics. The process has taken a while. Failing to hear all the candidates for President except one speak frankly and realistically about the state of the economy is pretty disillusioning. I guess it’s time to take Dmitry Orlov’s advice and focus on protecting myself, my family and my town and just not pay attention to what’s going on in Albany or Washington.

Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain, Randy Kuhl… who fucking cares? They’re all the same.

I’ll pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I’ll get on my knees and pray
I don’t get fooled again

  1. I know I am totally late on this (I guess I was way down the list in importance), but I just received my call from Tom Cole about the Congressional Order of Merit. Has anyone checked out the legality of this? I know it’s unethical, but that, unfortunately, does not mean illegal. Could I make up an award, let’ say “U.S. VIP,” and hand this honor out to anyone with the stipulation that they opt into something?

  2. I think we can all expect to get a lot more of those calls now that John McCain is broke. He’ll be trying to tap into his Republican buddies in Congress to pay the bills.
