What do you Want on your Tombstone?

I think this was a line from a spaghetti western, which the Very Big Food Corporation of America co-opted into a Pizza ad.

I hadn’t thought about it much until the Queen of the Universe and I took a hike to the local cemetery. There was an abolitionist guy who worked on the Underground Railroad during the Ante-Bellum period. He hung with Frederick Douglass, so he gets instant cred with me. Anyway, he founded the cemetery.

We were looking for his headstone in the graveyard, and then got sidetracked looking at all the cool headstones. Most were very ornate… classy… with some kind of religious reference and border work.

As we worked our way to the back of the cemetery, as more and more people began coming into the little town, the headstones lost a lot of their religious references and the images became a lot more diverse…. sometimes bizarre.

These headstones got me thinking that if I got only two images to put on my tombstone, what would they be? Most people seemed to have pictures of their favorite things. So I think on mine, I’d like my wife’s bare breasts. As long as we’re at it, we could sculpt those for a 3-D effect. The reasons for this are pretty obvious.

Then I’d have a picture of my zen, because it’s something that’s with me all the time. And might I say folks, I’ve got the coolest 30 gigs of music I’ve ever collected on there now. I’ve been tweaking it for a couple months. You know you’ve got great randomization when you get at least four really great songs in a row, and then a song or two you might not be familiar with.

Like yesterday, I went from an amazing but obscure Queen song called “Great King Rat” from their first album to an amazing Judy Garland song lovingly rendered by my second favorite alcoholic gay musician, Rufus Wainwright.

If I’m left stranded in some bizarre neutral afterlife, those are two things that could pretty much sustain me for all creation.

And that’s what I’d want on MY tombstone, which, I just realized this morning, could be this one.

And… I wonder if we’ll ever see this on a gravestone somewhere in Central New York.
