Easy Star All Stars and a Tragedy Narrowly Averted

At the beginning of most of my American History lessons I play a song to get my students thinking about the lesson. Friday I was teaching about Alexander Hamilton’s financial plan and so I wanted to use the Pink Floyd song “Money.” My kids are high school juniors, and I’ve been teaching long enough to be able to get away with “don’t give me that do-goody-good bullshit.”

Instead of playing Pink Floyd’s somewhat time-worn version that everyone has heard a million times on FM radio, I decided to play the Easy Star All Stars funky reggae version from “Dub Side of the Moon”. I don’t know this version of the song very well and I was concerned that there might be some profanity in the rap sections of the song, but decided to take my chances. I’d forgotten one important detail about this version. Fortunately the song started before any of the kids came into the room.

While I may be able to get away with “Bullshit” I don’t think I could have gotten away with this.
