Culture of Life News: Economics Made Fairly Easy
In my Social Studies Teacher school, they made me take Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. The problem is that I took both courses during my sophomore year. I don’t remember most of what happened my sophomore year. All I remember about Macroeconomics was that my professor was a blind Pakistani guy, and that somehow I managed to pass with a 2.5.
The one required course in the Social Studies curriculum that I’ve yet to teach is Economics. It deals with numbers. Math and numbers have never been my strong suit, even before I condemned my higher math functions to death during that infamous year in college.
I’m also a complete moron when it comes to personal finance. It took the Queen of my Universe a year of detached horror and stunned silence to help me reform my dietary habits, and now she’s taking on the gargantuan task of helping me straighten out all my insurance and investment stuff; something I’ve been ignoring for the entire length of my money making career. The worst of it’s over, but there’s been plenty of the same detached horror as we get my financial house in order.
For the past couple months, QoMU has been watching Wall Street pretty carefully, and found a great blog called Culture of Life News written by the brilliant Elaine Supkis. Elaine does us all a wonderful favor by reading all the really important stuff on the web regarding the economy, cuts and pastes the nitty-gritty, then explains it all while adding her take to it. Through reading the blog, and QoMU’s explanations of the basic things my feeble mind can’t comprehend, I’ve learned more about economics in the past month or so than I’ve learned in an entire lifetime.
QoMU has been reading Elaine’s blog assiduously for the past month, and has been filling me in on what’s going on in the world economy when I don’t have the time to read it for myself. And you know what folks? It ain’t good. Not good at all. The economic shit is hitting the fan as I write, and Elaine has been on top of it the whole time.
Just today I heard an encapsulation of all the nasty stuff going down in the world economy on NPR. Click here for the story and a link to the podcast. This is stuff Elaine has been talking about for weeks. I wonder how long it’s going to take the mainstream media to catch on? Probably not until twentysomething Wall Street wannabe’s start throwing themselves out of windows like they did back in ‘87.
If you’ve got the time to read, visiting Money Matters is well worth your time. It’s hard-hitting eyes-wide-open analysis that you won’t get anywhere else but the blogosphere. No one can understand completely just how much the Bush Administration and business as usual politics have f’ed up the world without a good understanding of the economic picture that Elaine so clearly, but brutally illustrates every day.

wow! I need to go change my boxers now, thanks
