How the Other Half is Living
by Lappe Parish (guest blogger)
We lost the ability to cut back on taxes with the last school vote. People who are voting to make their own lives or the lives of their children more “cushy” should look around and see that there are people in their neighborhood who can not afford to keep paying more and more for non-essentials.
The high cost of gas is making food and other commodities escalate. People who are middle class may think it doesn’t matter what the poor have to suffer but the life of the people on the bottom is what the whole society rests on.
The people in the Village, relatively poor to begin with, are being straddled with increasing debt for water plus possibly in the future (if the Mayor gets his way) with sewage treatment. Engineering costs are already being deducted.
Meanwhile many of these people are either on fixed incomes or they have low-paying jobs and often long, expensive commutes to get to them. Some people are working two jobs just to get by. Others are unemployed…and not necessarily getting benefits.
