Top 10 Songs about Alienation
1. Ants Marching - Dave Matthews BandClassic description of desperate relationships. This is #1 because the insect thing reminds me of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, the ultimate tale of alienation.
2. Synchronicity II - The Police
A classic from the most classic Police CD. Great Quote “Every meeting with his so-called superior is a humiliating kick in the crotch.” Ouch.
3. Cold Beer and Remote Control - Indigo Girls
One of the best songs Emily Saliers has written, and she’s written a lot of great ones. You can picture this character.
4. SpaceOddity - David Bowie
This is Major Tom to ground control.
5. Racing in the Street - Bruce Springsteen
“Well you’re born with nothing, and better off that way.”
6. Feel Like a Number - Bob Seger
And for most of his music, he sounds like one too.
7. 905 - The Who
One of my favorite John Entwistle songs, and it fits perfectly on “Who Are You.”
8. Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
Nobody depresses like Roger Waters. It’s hard to pick a favorite alienation song from the master himself.
9. Uniforms - Pete Townshend
A great song about the lack of strength in numbers.
10. Lost in the Supermarket - The Clash
Consumerism uber alles.
