The Step-Dog’s Life
I love my neighbor humans. Not as much as my Brian, Liz, Tara, Seth and Jake humans, but pretty close. They’re my step-humans. They take care of me, and play with me, and when I’m dirty or gassy, they send me home to my own humans.
I have free run of their house when I’m outside. They made a door for their cats, which I conveniently fit through. They even put a bar on the door to give me an extra challenge, but it takes more than that to stop me when it’s time to wake them up with big sloppy kisses in the morning.
I like it when they cook hamburgers, because they don’t know how much hamburger to buy and usually have one left over for me. In fact, they usually have a lot of leftovers for me, and quite honestly, it’s WAY better than the food I get at home.
Sometimes, like last week, my humans were away working, they came and rescued me and took me on a long walk. My humans keep me in a crate since I redecorated the couch and redesigned the Liz human’s expensive tennis bracelet, so I love it when my step-humans come over and get me out. We went through the woods and up the hill behind our houses. I played in the mud, sniffed out some deer carcasses, chase a couple deer and even swam a little. My humans just walked and talked. Boring.
The worst part of the walk is the bath afterwards. I don’t see why having mud caked on you from the shoulders down is a problem, but apparently it’s enough of a problem for them to rinse me off with the cold hose and undoglike smelling shampoo. Whatever… it’s worth it for the walk.
Sunday was awesome. Both my humans and step-humans took me hiking and gave me parts of their picnic dinner. I couldn’t chase deer because I had four of them to look after, but they did find a cool beaver pond for me to swim in. When we got home, my parents gave me the bath.

This morning sucked though. Human Jim, who lives across the street, was pulling into his driveway, and I ran to say hello to him because he keeps dog biscuits in his truck. I have him trained to give me one as soon as he gets out of the truck. I got a little too close this morning though, and I got caught up in the wheel base and dragged along the back of the truck. It’s a good thing Jim was going slow.
Thankfully all my humans were home at the time. I got some wicked road rash on my paws, and I had to have surgery on my jaw because it got smashed on the truck. From now on I’ll have to remember to wait for human Jim to stop the truck before I get him to do his trick.
So now I’m achy…and I’m on a lot of drugs, but it’s still kind of cool because my humans are waiting on me and giving me lots of attention. The Brian-human even stayed home from work. It’s still not worth wrestling with a truck though.

I love this story. This week I was asked what I missed most about Naples (not counting family) and I wanted to answer Ivory, but I couldnt because she is such a big part of our family. I have never scene my parents united more because of a dog, but there is no doubt that Ivoy has taken over the social side of things that my brother and sister once ruled. Cheers to good neighbors, and the family that joins them all together.
