Addiction and the Foo Bird

As someone who suffers from an addiction and works a Twelve Step program, I’ve notice that when Ive veered off the path of the steps, it’s usually because I fail to see how much better my life is as a result of clean living. I think sometimes that I have everything under control and can live life like a normal person. It reminds me of a story my father once told me……

Long ago there was a man who was as down and out as any man could be. He was a poor hopeless dreamer who’d spent whatever meager amount of money he’d accumulated on foolish schemes to get rich quick.

One day, he heard of the exotic Foo Bird. According to legend, the feces of the Foo Bird had magical powers. If the bird pooped on you all your wishes would come true as long as you didn’t remove the poop. He quickly packed his meager belongings and travelled to the rainforest where the Foo Bird was reputed to live.

For months he wandered the jungle listening for the unmistakable “foo foo” call. After months of searching and listening he grew more and more despondent. One day he heard the sound he’d been waiting for. The Foo bird called out from a short distance away. He spotted the mystical, beautiful bird and stayed under it for days until the moment finally came when the bird defecated on his shoulder.

As fast as he began wishing for things, they came to be. He went back to his home, wished himself a fortune, a beautiful home, a beautiful wife and all the material wealth he could think of. He wanted for nothing.

One day he decided that since he had everything he’d ever wanted that he could wipe away the poop from his shoulder. Soon after, his fortunes took a turn for the worse. His mansion burned down, his lovely wife divorced him and soon everything he’d wished for was gone, leaving him as broke and disconsolate as ever.

And the moral of the story is; if the Foo shits… wear it.
