Pink: Who Knew?

My daughter is the same music geek I was at her age. In fact, she’s a bit more advanced. I wish my parents had been as cool as I am about listening to my music as I am listening to hers.

Usually, she’ll come to my house with a new CD, we’ll upload it into my collection and listen to it when she and her sisters are over. It’s usually something like Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan or Jesse McCartney.I’ll seldom, if ever, listen to HER music of my own volition.

Then she played me “Stupid Girls” by Pink. My daughter, like me, hates all things foofi and cheerleaderish. I couldn’t have been prouder of her than at the moment I first heard the song. So I listened to more Pink, and she quickly became the person I’d most like to have my daughter adopt as a role model.

But then I heard, Dear Mr. President. My daughter had no idea what most of the references were about in the song, but I was more than happy to teach her about all of them. It was a bonding experience like no other.

I hope my daughter will grow up and do something like this. If I were Pink’s Dad… I’d be REALLY proud of my little girl. If I were Jenna Bush, I’d be ashamed of mine.
