‘Twas The Night Before Election Results
It’s election night, and it’s almost time for bed. In a way, it’s like Christmas. That’s not necessarily a good thing.
Will it be like the Christmas morning when I woke up and found the beautiful sparkling trumpet I didn’t think my parents could afford? Or will it be like the morning when my well-meaning parents thought they detected an inkling of interest in science and bought me a microscope and junior chemistry set?
In December of 2000, I went to bed feeling fairly smug and victorious since the networks had called the election for Al Gore. I kept the TV on just in case, only to wake up at 2:00 to the unfolding nightmare.
As a loyal Democrat, I’m going to sleep hoping against hope that my team will take over the House as some pundits are predicting, but I’ve learned not to get my hopes up, even if I see promising signs on the news. Part of me doesn’t want to go to sleep until I see something, because I don’t want to face the chemistry set and microscope unprepared like I did when I was a kid.
Yet there’s still that glimmer of hope kept alive by the eternal optimist in me. Maybe it’ll be better than I thought. Maybe it’ll be like the year Dad went crazy on Christmas Eve and bought me a $50 gift certificate to the local record store.
I hope I sleep soundly enough to dream. I’ll dream of a Democratic New York, with Governor Spitzer beaming proudly next to Senator Clinton. I’ll dream that the good people of New York’s 26th elected the anti-war former Naval Officer over the wife-beating Republican tool.
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming is there?
